Please read below.

Thank you for choosing SnoDen Samoyeds and I hope you love your new puppy. I just want to take a few minutes and go over a few things about your puppy.

Please know that your puppy will need to see a vet. You should get the puppy in with your local veterinarian within the first three days. Your puppy has had a 5-way puppy shot which prevents Canine Distemper, Adenovirus Type 2 (Respiratory Disease), Parainfluenza, Parvovirus (Modified Live Virus) and been de-wormed but it is important to schedule future appointments.

Your puppy will need boosters every three weeks until they are 16 weeks old (4 months). A puppy’s immune system is always growing and it is imperative they receive their boosters to make sure they are safe against contagious diseases.

When you bring your puppy home please treat them like a new born baby and limit their exposures to un-sanitized areas and public places. Keep your puppy home and limit visitors until they have had at least three boosters.

One of the worst diseases a puppy can get is Parvo which has a 70% mortality rate. Prevention/Control of parvovirus by sanitation measures alone is extremely difficult because the virus is such a resistant, hardy organism and because it is so easily spread. Contact with other dogs and especially their stool, should be minimized. Clorox diluted one part to 30 parts water (4 oz Clorox in 1 gallon of water) has been effective in disinfecting inanimate objects such as clothing, floors, puppy toys, kennels, etc.

However, it is impractical, if not impossible, to disinfect public streets, parks, etc. Isolation of infected dogs is another method of control, moderately effective. Both of these measures will help reduce the amount of contagious virus in the environment, but only a full series of vaccinations, with appropriate booster intervals, will help to control the source of infection, the contagious shedding dog. I usually Clorox my shoes by stepping on damp rag and sprites my hand if I am visiting a new puppy’s home.11899880_10153509229660610_5541701829256703466_n

Please also make sure to puppy proof your home. Puppies are like children. They love to learn and are extremely inquisitive. And just like with children, you have to keep things they can chew on and swallow out of reach. Try and find a secure place to let your puppy play. I like to use the kitchen where it is easy to clean up any accidents. Try and keep plastic, toxic food, cooked bones, and other dangerous items away from you puppy. Make sure trash cans are secured or they will get into them and eat items that will definitely make them sick.Jewels Pups 11 5wks (10)

It is important to socialize your puppy. The most crucial time to socialize is between 12-16 weeks but you can begin as soon as your puppy gets home.  I recommend that most of the socialization be done at home until the puppy has had three puppy shots.

When your puppy is awake or sleeping keep your in home commotion to a normal volume. These noises, movement, and sounds are good for a puppy to hear and feel safe around.  You can also create tunnels, ramps, small bridges, jumps, and other obstacles to let your puppy know these things are fun and safe.

Don’t worry a few bumps and bruises are normal during a learning curve.  You can also use the radio and TV to let your puppy get use to noises like music bass, thunder, firecrackers, gun shots, yelling, etc.

Please note that puppies may act  scared when you introduce them to new noises or obstacles, however, it only takes five to ten minutes for them to get use to a new experience and be on to the next experience.

Also, when feeding your puppy have an adult play in their food dish and take the dish away. Make your puppy wait and do not give the food until your puppy is calm and not demanding to give to them by jumping, barking, or pushing. When holding your puppy, hold their legs and examine their ears. Do not pull but just hold and examine. If they pull have them stop and hold until they relax. This will make your puppy tolerate toe nail clipping, ear cleaning, and playing with young children.
